Coming back to my experience with Nokia design I found that every consecutive push on mobile takes me to a logical steps as given below.

Menu->Messages->Text Msgs->Create Msg->Send->Search->First entry->send

For some reason auto key guard did not work, I had my mobile on my pant pockets at the end of travel to my office I realized that I have sent some 15 sms to my friend whose number was the first entry in my mobile.

After burning my finger twice I add the following address entry Aaa NULL with no number in it. The temple tank lies opposite the tower.

Karpagambal is said to have worshipped the Lord in the form of a peacock (Mayil in Tamil) & hence the area came to be called Mylapore.

Thirugnanasambandar, is said to have brought back to life the maiden Poompavai, daughter of Sivanesa Chettiar ( a Siva devotee) who was desirous of marrrying him, at Mylapore. The saint poet Tiruvalluvar lived here. The bronze idols of the 63 Nayanmars, the saints who were devotees of Lord Siva are placed in the Kapaleeswarar Sannadhi. Every year the Arupathumoovar festival is conducted & the 63 nayanmars are taken in procession.
-------------------------------------------------------

The novel is easy read and doesn't tax my brain. Very recently I finished reading Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum and I yet to understand the whole plot of it. It seems that I should read atleast three times to grasp the essence of Eco.

Dan Brown takes his artistic liberty in the way he uses science in the novel and that at times looks silly. If you want to read what happens at CERN then you should read book Story of W and Z by Watkins, P. It traces everything from start to finish of the discovering the W and Z bosons by team headed by Carlo Rubia.

But the artwork in the book i.e. anagrams in the book by John Langdon amazed me. It may come in several small, specialized parts. She terms this as Intelligence Augmentation instead of Artificial Intelligence.

The core idea is pretty simple and it is plain common sense. In a group every person may have unique intelligence gained by his or her experiences. If people augment each others intelligence then the group's intelligence is much more than the sum of the individual. I believe this is the corner stone of any team building exercise. One for all and all for one should be the motto.

The idea Pattie Maes pursues is to built a IA software that learns by inputs given by the user and collates the information. The idea is there are no new problems and it is already solved by others. (Think of cut and pasting the code from internet!). So if I want to buy a car I will use this IA system and give my preferences and priorities then IA sees the how others have solved this problem. (This may include the price comparison, dealers etc.) Over a period of time the system becomes self regulating and will be able to solve some of the simple problems in life!

The other example is the Backrub algorithm designed by Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page. As an example take Absolut Blog. It’s worth to know who all link to this blog (for this blog it doesn’t matter to whom it links till becomes really famous). If there is link to this blog say from BBC then it carries more weight the one coming from my alternate Flickr page link, and this simple plain common sense! Backrub is baptized as Google now. No marks for guessing how much Brin and Page made just by following common sense route. I may be over simplifying things here, but that's ok. If its complex then it is not matured enough.

Having said about Google, I should point Cyc here. (You can find the open source version here) It's going to be available for public this year. It's promised that search engine based on Cyc will give Knowledge-enhanced search results.

If you are interested in making the next big thing then looks no further. Take some common sense behavior and give generic shape and you may be raking in a billion dollars!

(Note: This is first time I have typed some thing this big for a blog, this it self is an achievement for me. Kudos!)
-------------------------------------------------------

Most of time the song/tune that keeps ringing is not even worth mentioning they are boring and mundane stuff. It happens that songs have recent memory imprints in a sense I have watched it on television or heard it over a radio few days back. The ad is termed Bihar Calling . The ad telle all the points that are frozen in time. (Bihar is India's first republic, place of Buddha, Asoka, Chandragupta etc ..) The ad is primarily targetted at the investors (why not tourists !) with the assurance given by Nitesh Kumar, the new kid on the block.

But will explain the unfortunate incident of buring five human beings of a family becausee the head of the family complained againts the upper caste people for stealing his buffalo. The persons burnt alive are his wife and five children. This happens on the start of new year 2006.

Nitesh need not do the same mistake as BJP did with India Shining propaganda, instead of cheap media tricks he should make good governance first which other's can see and feel. Glass.

Facts

The most important factor in software work is the quality of the programmers

The best programmers are up to 28 times better than the worst programmers

Adding people to a late project makes it later.

The working environment has a profound impact on productivity and quality

Hype (about tools and techniques) is the plague on the house of software.

New tools/techniques cause an initial loss of productivity/quality.

Software developers talk a lot about tools, but seldom use them.

One of the two most common causes of runaway projects is poor estimation

Software estimation usually occurs at the wrong time.

Software estimation is usually done by the wrong people.

Software estimates are rarely corrected as the project proceeds.

It is not surprising that software estimates are bad. But we live and die by them anyway!

There is a disconnect between software management and their programmers.

The answer to a feasibility study is almost always “yes”.

Reuse-in-the-small is a well-solved problem.

Reuse-in-the-large remains a mostly unsolved problem.

Reuse-in-the-large works best for families of related systems.

Reusable components are three times as hard to build, and should be tried out in three settings.

Modification of reused code is particularly error-prone.

Design pattern reuse is one solution to the problems of code reuse.

For every 25 percent increase in problem complexity, there is a 100 percent increase in solution complexity.

Eighty percent of software work is intellectual. A fair amount of it is creative. Little of it is clerical.

One of the two most common causes of runaway projects is unstable requirements.

Requirements errors are the most expensive to fix during production.

Explicit requirements “explode” as implicit (design) requirements for a solution evolve.

Explicit requirements “explode” as implicit (design) requirements for a solution evolve.

There is seldom one best design solution to a software problem.

Design is a complex, iterative process. Initial design solutions are usually wrong, and certainly not optimal.

Designer “primitives” (solutions they can readily code) rarely match programmer “primitives”.

COBOL is a very bad language, but all the others (for business applications) are so much worse.

Error-removal is the most time-consuming phase of the life cycle.

Software is usually tested at best at the 55-60 percent (branch) coverage level.

100 percent coverage is still far from enough.

Test tools are essential, but many are rarely used.

Test automation rarely is. Most testing activities cannot be automated.

Programmer-created, built-in, debug code is an important supplement to testing tools.

Rigorous inspections can remove up to 90 percent of errors before the first test case is run.

But rigorous inspections should not replace testing.

Post-delivery reviews (some call them “retrospectives”) are important, and seldom performed.

Reviews are both technical and sociological, and both factors must be accommodated.

Maintenance typically consumes 40-80 percent of software costs. It is probably the most important life cycle phase of software.

Enhancements represent roughly 60 percent of maintenance costs.

Maintenance is a solution, not a problem.

Understanding the existing product is the most difficult task of maintenance.

Better methods lead to MORE maintenance, not less.

Quality IS: a collection of attributes.

Quality is NOT: user satisfaction, meeting requirements, achieving cost/schedule, or reliability.

There are errors that most programmers tend to make.

Errors tend to cluster.

There is no single best approach to software error removal.

Residual errors will always persist. The goal should be to minimize or eliminate severe errors.

Efficiency stems more from good design than good coding.

High-order-language code can be about 90 percent as efficient as comparable assembler code

There are tradeoffs between size and time optimization

Many researchers advocate rather than investigate

Fallacies

You can't manage what you can't measure.

You can manage quality into a software product.
People.

Programming can and should be egoless.

Tools and techniques: one size fits all.

Software needs more methodologies.

To estimate cost and schedule, first estimate lines of code.

Random test input is a good way to optimize testing.

The way to predict future maintenance cost and to make product replacement decisions is to look at past cost data.

The way to predict future maintenance cost and to make product replacement decisions is to look at past cost data.

You teach people how to program by showing them how to write programs.

I wish to know if you also have same opinion as Glass. If your proffesion is not software then also you can comment on simillar ideas in your stream of work.

-------------------------------------------------------

In the program one of the gentleman made a statement that "Science is provisional".

How true, one can't agree more on that. What I like about the Science is that none of the ideas is treated as dogma. If tomorow we find a better explanation for relativity supported by proof, we are not ashamed of dumping Einstein. In science it is expected that people challenge the existing ideas which generates more new ideas and makes the place fertile for future growth.

I also wonder if Mathematics is provisional or not, what if mathematics is provisional, I think it will be a disaster. I also have this very fundamental question on mathematics. Is mathematics invented or discovered ?

This is more of philosophical in nature. Amen!
-------------------------------------------------------

Just to reconfirm that software can kill.

Last month automaker Toyota announced a recall of 160,000 of its Prius hybrid vehicles following reports of vehicle warning lights illuminating for no reason, and cars' gasoline engines stalling unexpectedly. But unlike the large-scale auto recalls of years past, the root of the Prius issue wasn't a hardware problem -- it was a programming error in the smart car's embedded code. The Prius had a software bug.

With that recall, the Prius joined the ranks of the buggy computer -- a club that began in 1945 when engineers found a moth in Panel F, Relay #70 of the Harvard Mark II system.<correction>The computer was running a test of its multiplier and adder when the engineers noticed something was wrong. The moth was trapped, removed and taped into the computer's logbook with the words: "first actual case of a bug being found."

Sixty years later, computer bugs are still with us, and show no sign of going extinct. As the line between software and hardware blurs, coding errors are increasingly playing tricks on our daily lives. Bugs don't just inhabit our operating systems and applications -- today they lurk within our cell phones and our pacemakers, our power plants and medical equipment. And now, in our cars.

But which are the worst?

It's all too easy to come up with a list of bugs that have wreaked havoc. It's harder to rate their severity. Which is worse -- a security vulnerability that's exploited by a computer worm to shut down the internet for a few days or a typo that triggers a day-long crash of the nation's phone system? The answer depends on whether you want to make a phone call or check your e-mail.

Many people believe the worst bugs are those that cause fatalities. To be sure, there haven't been many, but cases like the Therac-25 are widely seen as warnings against the widespread deployment of software in safety critical applications. Experts who study such systems, though, warn that even though the software might kill a few people, focusing on these fatalities risks inhibiting the migration of technology into areas where smarter processing is sorely needed. In the end, they say, the lack of software might kill more people than the inevitable bugs.

What seems certain is that bugs are here to stay. Here, in chronological order, is the Wired News list of the 10 worst software bugs of all time … so far.

July 28, 1962 -- Mariner I space probe. A bug in the flight software for the Mariner 1 causes the rocket to divert from its intended path on launch. Mission control destroys the rocket over the Atlantic Ocean. The investigation into the accident discovers that a formula written on paper in pencil was improperly transcribed into computer code, causing the computer to miscalculate the rocket's trajectory.

1982 -- Soviet gas pipeline. Operatives working for the Central Intelligence Agency allegedly (.pdf) plant a bug in a Canadian computer system purchased to control the trans-Siberian gas pipeline. The Soviets had obtained the system as part of a wide-ranging effort to covertly purchase or steal sensitive U.S. technology. The CIA reportedly found out about the program and decided to make it backfire with equipment that would pass Soviet inspection and then fail once in operation. The resulting event is reportedly the largest non-nuclear explosion in the planet's history.

1985-1987 -- Therac-25 medical accelerator. A radiation therapy device malfunctions and delivers lethal radiation doses at several medical facilities. Based upon a previous design, the Therac-25 was an "improved" therapy system that could deliver two different kinds of radiation: either a low-power electron beam (beta particles) or X-rays. The Therac-25's X-rays were generated by smashing high-power electrons into a metal target positioned between the electron gun and the patient. A second "improvement" was the replacement of the older Therac-20's electromechanical safety interlocks with software control, a decision made because software was perceived to be more reliable.

What engineers didn't know was that both the 20 and the 25 were built upon an operating system that had been kludged together by a programmer with no formal training. Because of a subtle bug called a "race condition," a quick-fingered typist could accidentally configure the Therac-25 so the electron beam would fire in high-power mode but with the metal X-ray target out of position. At least five patients die; others are seriously injured.

1988 -- Buffer overflow in Berkeley Unix finger daemon. The first internet worm (the so-called Morris Worm) infects between 2,000 and 6,000 computers in less than a day by taking advantage of a buffer overflow. The specific code is a function in the standard input/output library routine called gets() designed to get a line of text over the network. Unfortunately, gets() has no provision to limit its input, and an overly large input allows the worm to take over any machine to which it can connect.

Programmers respond by attempting to stamp out the gets() function in working code, but they refuse to remove it from the C programming language's standard input/output library, where it remains to this day.

1988-1996 -- Kerberos Random Number Generator. The authors of the Kerberos security system neglect to properly "seed" the program's random number generator with a truly random seed. As a result, for eight years it is possible to trivially break into any computer that relies on Kerberos for authentication. It is unknown if this bug was ever actually exploited.

January 15, 1990 -- AT&T Network Outage. A bug in a new release of the software that controls AT&T's #4ESS long distance switches causes these mammoth computers to crash when they receive a specific message from one of their neighboring machines -- a message that the neighbors send out when they recover from a crash.

One day a switch in New York crashes and reboots, causing its neighboring switches to crash, then their neighbors' neighbors, and so on. Soon, 114 switches are crashing and rebooting every six seconds, leaving an estimated 60 thousand people without long distance service for nine hours. The fix: engineers load the previous software release.

1993 -- Intel Pentium floating point divide. A silicon error causes Intel's highly promoted Pentium chip to make mistakes when dividing floating-point numbers that occur within a specific range. For example, dividing 4195835.0/3145727.0 yields 1.33374 instead of 1.33382, an error of 0.006 percent. Although the bug affects few users, it becomes a public relations nightmare. With an estimated 3 million to 5 million defective chips in circulation, at first Intel only offers to replace Pentium chips for consumers who can prove that they need high accuracy; eventually the company relents and agrees to replace the chips for anyone who complains. The bug ultimately costs Intel $475 million.

1995/1996 -- The Ping of Death. A lack of sanity checks and error handling in the IP fragmentation reassembly code makes it possible to crash a wide variety of operating systems by sending a malformed "ping" packet from anywhere on the internet. Most obviously affected are computers running Windows, which lock up and display the so-called "blue screen of death" when they receive these packets. But the attack also affects many Macintosh and Unix systems as well.

June 4, 1996 -- Ariane 5 Flight 501. Working code for the Ariane 4 rocket is reused in the Ariane 5, but the Ariane 5's faster engines trigger a bug in an arithmetic routine inside the rocket's flight computer. The error is in the code that converts a 64-bit floating-point number to a 16-bit signed integer. The faster engines cause the 64-bit numbers to be larger in the Ariane 5 than in the Ariane 4, triggering an overflow condition that results in the flight computer crashing.

First Flight 501's backup computer crashes, followed 0.05 seconds later by a crash of the primary computer. As a result of these crashed computers, the rocket's primary processor overpowers the rocket's engines and causes the rocket to disintegrate 40 seconds after launch.

November 2000 -- National Cancer Institute, Panama City. In a series of accidents, therapy planning software created by Multidata Systems International, a U.S. firm, miscalculates the proper dosage of radiation for patients undergoing radiation therapy.

Multidata's software allows a radiation therapist to draw on a computer screen the placement of metal shields called "blocks" designed to protect healthy tissue from the radiation. But the software will only allow technicians to use four shielding blocks, and the Panamanian doctors wish to use five.

The doctors discover that they can trick the software by drawing all five blocks as a single large block with a hole in the middle. What the doctors don't realize is that the Multidata software gives different answers in this configuration depending on how the hole is drawn: draw it in one direction and the correct dose is calculated, draw in another direction and the software recommends twice the necessary exposure.

At least eight patients die, while another 20 receive overdoses likely to cause significant health problems. The physicians, who were legally required to double-check the computer's calculations by hand, are indicted for murder.

-------------------------------------------------------

On how even small things would bring an immense sense of joy to me in my childhood days. Non event things like watching a favourite television show, wearing new dresses, eating my favourite dishes or going out for that matter was really interesting and fulfilling.

I was wrongly thinking that as an adult, I have over grown on all those silly feelings till last week. SriSivan completed one year on planet earth this november 21st. To us SriSivan is a remainder of all the good things in life. My wife insisted that we send his photo for Sun tv's Vazhalthalam Vanga (?) program so that we can see his photo on television. Eagerly I uploaded SriSivan's photo on Sun tv's website and waited for the day to arrive. Finally the day arrived were everybody at home was sitting in the front of the idiot's box and waiting in the bated breath only to find that Sun tv did not show SriSivan's photo. I was totally depressed but at the same time I am happy that child in me alive and kicking. He still finds pleasure in small things.

Finally, I have made up my mind to enjoy even the smallest things that life has to offer from hereafter. (It's sad that SriSivan fell ill and we did not celebrate his birthday on November 21st.)
-------------------------------------------------------

I think this is a very healthy habit as I start my day with upbeat note. (Whatever! Meanwhile the other news are going to make you sick any way!)

My favourite comic strip are:

Calvin and Hobbes

Beetle Bailey

Garfield

Hagar the horrible

Dibert

I haven't listed them in any particular order of merit and good part is they are available in most of the newspapers getting published in Bangalore. Finally there are bunch of science cartoons that I enjoy in New Scientist, Scientific American and American Scientist.

Here is a sample of S.Harris cartoon. In other words given two equally predictive theories, choose the simpler. One should try to apply this prinicple in everyday life for a better living.

Here is an example of application of the principle.

When I watch those tearjerkers in television, like Kolangal serial, I used to theorize why these characters in the plot are so dumb and inane? To arrive at satisfactory answer, i used to speculate lot of different ideas like , the director incompetent, is it the mass behaviour that we like tearjerkers etc. Finally with the help from Occam's razor I have reached the conclusion.

I watch Kolangal because, I am dumb and inane!
-------------------------------------------------------

Is the loss of information is an information by itself? I think it's not. Black signifies there is no colour information and it doesn't make black a colour by itself.

I remember a paradox in physics that I read pretty long time ago, the one relating to Einsteins relativity theory. Consider a brid flying at the speed of light. It's flying over a horizontal plane which has verticle wall over it. Now the shadow of bird is also travelling at the speed of light. Now when the bird crosses the wall the shodow of the bird travels at a very higher speed over the wall. If the speed of the bird is speed of the light then the speed of shadow is much greater than speed of light when it crosses the wall. Does this violate Einsteins relativity ?

Einstein need not worry about this because the shadow is absence of light, therefore absence of information. Which means no information can faster than light. The black colour of electron also falls under this category.

I really liked Gp's way of thinking out of the box and coming out with a trump! There are still four of my questions begging for an answer.
-------------------------------------------------------

Especially the ones in rural villages. I found childrens really intrested in attending schools and there is a mid-day meal scheme that helps the poor children.

Compare this with schools in cities like Bangalore. People are shelling out sum greater than 50K rupees to get their kids admitted in pre-kinder garden.
-------------------------------------------------------

If that doesn't inspire you to read my blog, I don't know what will. The inconvenience caused to our regular grocery customers is deeply regretted.
Please feel free to visit our other categories on Fabmall.com however, to shop for other products.
We will inform you as soon as we are ready to start accepting grocery orders again. "

I was introduced to Fabmart by a collegue some five years back. Since then it's been more than four years of hassle free shopping of grocery for me, thanks to Fabmart. Today I find that the online stores are no more. I had called Fabmall to find out when it will be up and running only to find my calls getting hopped to someone next in the chain. Finally a lady took my call and said that they are not taking any orders over the net or on phone. Pity this should happen.

I was expecting this to happen someday or the other, as the online stores dropped from the list and only Bangalore was surving for some time and I think MSN had some stake at Fabmall, the senior managers were not to be seen.

I feel a sense of personal loss for me.
-------------------------------------------------------
